In 1852, former slave and then-abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass was asked to address a Fourth of July audience that included the President of the United States and other Washington dignitaries in Rochester, New York.  

The speech Douglass wrote and delivered at that celebration has since been hailed as one of the most powerful and moving orations in history.
